Why this site exists
Word count sounds trivial until you are 40 words over a hard limit and your word processor and the submission form disagree about what a word is. Hyphenates, dashes, numerals, footnotes: every counter treats them slightly differently.
This site counts in the open and explains the rules it used, which matters more than the number itself when a limit is enforced.
How the tool works
Your text is processed in your browser as you type. It is not uploaded, not saved, and not seen by us at any point, which is the only reasonable design for a tool people paste unpublished drafts and confidential documents into.
The counter reports words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time, so you can match whichever definition the place you are submitting to actually uses.
What accuracy means here
Reading time uses 238 words per minute for silent adult reading of general prose, drawn from published reading-rate research rather than the round 200 most sites guess at. Technical material reads slower, and the page says so instead of pretending one number fits everything.
Who operates wordsnap.net
wordsnap.net is owned and operated by Noble Erne, LLC, an independent technology consultancy. Noble Erne builds and maintains a small group of single-purpose web utilities, each on its own domain, each written and reviewed separately.
The site is funded by advertising and, on a few pages, clearly labeled affiliate links. Nothing on the site is paid placement. No advertiser has any influence over what the guides say or what the tools report.

Every explainer on this site is written from scratch for this domain and reviewed before publication. Pages carry a review date so you can tell how current they are. When something turns out to be wrong, it gets corrected rather than quietly deleted.
